Not All “Muse” Is the Same

What separates an authentic vial from a counterfeit one.

Three things. The lab that made it. The method it was made under. The Certificate of Analysis that travels with it. Each one verifiable. Each one specific. Without them, what's in the vial is unknown.

In recent months, MCI has observed an increase in unlicensed companies marketing formulations containing low percentages of SSEA-3⁺ cells, often blended with large quantities of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Others promote misleading combination formulas or “hybrid” constructs that can differ significantly in biological behavior, immune profile, preparation, and clinical validation. These products frequently cite established Muse cell research that may not be applicable, while also violating the Dezawa MuseCells® intellectual property portfolio.

Professor Mari Dezawa is an internationally recognized pioneer in regenerative medicine and the discoverer of Multilineage-Differentiating Stress-Enduring (Muse) cells — a unique population of endogenous, pluripotent-like stem cells capable of surviving stress and differentiating without genetic modification.

MD, Chiba University School of Medicine (1989). PhD, Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine (1995). Associate Professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine (2003). Appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Stem Cell Biology and Histology at Tohoku University in 2008, where she made one of the most significant discoveries in regenerative medicine.

Her discovery and methodologies have been published in PNAS (2010, 2011), Nature Protocols (2013), and Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences (2022). Her clinical research explores Muse cells in acute myocardial infarction, subacute stroke, ALS, epidermolysis bullosa, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and cervical spinal cord injury — with recent publications in Stem Cells Translational Medicine (2024).

Recipient of the Commendation for Science and Technology from the Government of Japan (2011). Inducted as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, USA (2018).
